The exhibition The African American Odyssey: A Quest for Full Citizenship, showcases the incomparable African American collections of the Library of Congress. Displaying more than 240 items, including books, government documents, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, plays, films, and recordings, this is the largest black history exhibit ever held at the Library, and the first exhibition of any kind to feature presentations in all three of the Library's buildings.

Earlier this month Apple released an update to one of iTunes best kept secrets iTunes U. Since mid 2007 iTunes U has provided free access to thousands of university audio and video lectures, the updated application extends functionality allowing educators to attach supporting media such as syllabi and notes to lectures. The iTunes U update also integrates closely with the newly released iBooks 2 which features eBook textbooks. Use of the new iTunes U application requires an IOS device, but anyone with an iTunes account can download and enjoy the audio and video lectures as podcasts.

The works of Sir Isaac Newton digitized for all to see

The Library at University of Cambridge has made available for public viewing, a portion of Sir Isaac Newton's original handwritten notes and manuscripts. The Newton Papers is the first in a new Foundations of Science collection offered by the Cambridge Digital Library.

Newton was a student at Cambridge from 1661 to 1665 and was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics from 1669 to 1701. After his death, many of his notes and manuscripts were passed down through his family until 1872, when they were given to the university and cataloged.

The initial selection focuses mainly on his early work in mathematics during the 1660s but also includes the original manuscript for Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), which contains Newton's law of gravity and laws of motion. These discoveries formed the basis of classical mechanics and significantly changed the way we look at the universe.

El Día de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead or All Saints Day/All Souls Day is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin countries on November 2.

El Día de los Muertos is a day to honor the life and death of relatives and loved ones. Alters are assembled for the arrival of the souls of the departed loved ones. Alters usually consist of favorite foods, an array of flowers, photographs of the individuals, paintings, candles, incense, toys, and drinks. Common places for alters are at the gravesites, homes, and other personal spaces. Many activities include grave cleaning, elaborate dances, vigils and family story telling.

The American Library Association defines information literacy as “Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.” Being able to find information is not enough in this age of digital information. We are flooded with information from our phones, televisions, radios, and computers. It is important to learn how to filter that information and narrow it down to the information that is needed. This month we will be adding items to the blog that help you find the information that you need at a given point and time. If you have a need for information and can’t find it, email us and we will help you find it.

Study reveals interesting facts about book circulation in academic libraries

This story appeared in libraryjournal.com about a study conducted by OCLC and OhioLink. While participation was limited to Ohio colleges and universities as well as the state library (89 libraries in all), it is the largest of its kind and should provide a basis for future research and may change a few perceptions about how library books are being used in an academic setting. For instance, the study indicates that 80% of a library's circulation is driven by just 6% of its collection, as opposed to the commonly believed "80/20" rule.

April Dishon is a former employee of the library and in her book Nuggets for the 21 Day Fast, she shares brief spiritual tidbits that are practical and can be applied to everyday life.

The British Library goes digital to share its literary wealth from the past.

The British Library has partnered with Google to digitize 250,000 items from 1700 to 1870 and make available for free viewing through Google Books as well as the library's website. Since these items are all part of the public domain, their entire contents will be viewable. This generous offering will total 40 million pages of material. It’s an excellent opportunity to explore a library with one of the largest and rarest collections in the world. Who knows what you might find!

In addition, The British Library has also teamed up with BiblioLabs this year to create a new app for the iPad that allows users to access a great deal of books from the 19th century. The selection includes “historical and antiquarian books that range from classic novels to original accounts by Victorian travelers, and from science and exploration to poetry, memoir and military history.” It will soon grow to 60,000 titles and features high quality scans of the originals to bring the look of the old pages right off the shelf and onto the tablet.

The title of this book almost says it all. What it doesn’t tell you is that even though they continued to hope, none of these men would be free if good people had not done something about their situation. These interviews give a face to the people exonerated through DNA testing, new evidence, and the reexamination of old evidence. Their faith, strength and courage during the years they were imprisoned “teaches us that no matter how we are tested in our lives, it is never wrong to have hope.”

A rare copy of the Declaration of Independence at the Dallas Public Library

The holiday may have passed but the spirit of Independence Day lives year-round at the Dallas Public Library downtown, where one of only 26 remaining copies of this extraordinary document resides. After revising Thomas Jefferson's rough draft, the Continental Congress ordered that the Declaration of Independence be published on July 4th, 1776. The task was carried out that night by John Dunlap who owned a print shop in Philadelphia. The next morning, around 200 copies of the "Dunlap Broadsides" were distributed by members of Congress to various officials and military commanders throughout the colonies. One copy was sent to George Washington, which he ordered to be read aloud to his troops. The copy owned by the City of Dallas was discovered in a book store in Philadelphia in 1968. Its historical significance is truly great and it can be seen on the 7th floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library at 1515 Young St.

New UNT Dallas Library Assistant

Miguel Flores is the new student assistant for the UNT Dallas Library. He's currently a senior working on his undergrad degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. Miguel is part of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honors Society Chapter of North Dallas. He recently founded (2011) the UNT Dallas SIFE Team (Students In Free Enterprise) and currently serves as the president. His hobbies include playing soccer, rollerblading, football, basketball and planning for future business ventures. We welcome him to the UNTD Library.

eBooks are the largest format in the US now

For the first time eBooks have become the largest format in the United States, outselling print books. eBooks can be very convenient. If you finish a book in a series or just run out of something to read at 10:00pm, you can browse the web store, choose a new book, and download it in a matter of minutes. You don’t have to run down to the local all night superstore to choose from a limited selection of best sellers.

Of course, there is no way to get the author to sign an electronic book, which is just one of the pleasures of owning a “real” book. Last month at the Texas Library Association Conference, I had the opportunity to get dozens of author’s autographs. Even standing in line for two hours was worth it when I gave away the personally autographed copy of “The End”, the 15^th book in “A series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snickett. The squeals of delight from the 11 year old recipient made it all worthwhile. I have to admit that I am excited to have an autographed book by Elizabeth Moon, who wrote among other things, “The Speed of Dark”.

Leora Kemp Retires

Leora Kemp has been the head of the library at UNT Dallas since it was in building zero on Hampton Road. Her vision of the "virtual" library has been the guiding force in developing programs and instruction in electronic databases, research strategies, and outreach to area libraries and schools. Her influence has reached well beyond the university walls as she has worked to help other librarians prepare students for college. Leora has shared information about education and librarianship with local librarians through a mailing list hosted by UNT Dallas. The mailing list includes librarians from K-12, public, private, and academic libraries.

Luckily she has agreed to volunteer at the UNT Dallas library after her retirement and we have several projects ready for her touch. One of the first projects will be to label the hundreds of pictures that have been taken over the last 11 years. We wish Leora the best in retirement.

Women's History Month

President Jimmy Carter's Message to the nation designating March 2-8, 1980 as the first National Women's History Week.

From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.

As Dr. Gerda Lerner has noted, "Women's History is Women's Right." - It is an essential and indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision."

I ask my fellow Americans to recognize this heritage with appropriate activities during National Women's History Week, March 2-8, 1980.

I urge libraries, schools, and community organizations to focus their observances on the leaders who struggled for equality - - Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, and Alice Paul.

Understanding the true history of our country will help us to comprehend the need for full equality under the law for all our people.

This goal can be achieved by ratifying the 27th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states that "Equality of Rights under the Law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
