There are many marketable technological skills that you can develop as a student that will make you more attractive in a competitive employment market. However, you might have noticed that licenses to most proprietary software can be far too expensive. Thankfully the open source community provides an alternative to costly proprietary software in the form of software that can be downloaded for free over the internet. Beyond being free open source software allows users to develop skills that can be used to complete complex tasks today and be transferred to other software packages.

One of the more popular open source software packages is GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) an image manipulation program. GIMP is similar to Adobe’s Photoshop allowing users to manipulate images, create logos, design visuals for websites and much more. You can learn more about how to use GIMP by downloading the Book of GIMP: A CompleteGuide to Nearly Everything (2013) which is available as an eBook through the UNT Dallas Library.

So to the interested there is no barrier to entry. Install the GIMP software package to your computer here, open the eBook guide here, and start developing your skills today!
