New Book Explores Dallas's Demolished Past

Lost Dallas, from the "Images of America" series, is written by Mark Doty, historic preservation officer for the City of Dallas.

Description from Arcadia Publishing

"Although founded in 1841, Dallas did not experience significant growth until 1873 when the Texas and Pacific (T&P) Railroad crossed the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC) near downtown. Securing these railroads led to a prolific building boom that has never fully ended, even during the Great Depression and subsequent world wars. Dallas’s ability to sustain growth and development as a banking and commercial center led to the demolition of much of the early built environment, a trend that continues even today. Lost Dallas explores and documents those buildings, neighborhoods, and places that have been lost and even forgotten since the city's modest antebellum beginning."

Your Name

 Author: Jessica Blade
I wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
I wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
I wrote your name in my heart,
and forever it will stay.

Why Do Old Books Smell?

Have you ever wondered why used books smell the way they do? Abe books did some research on the topic and discovered that books cast off that unique odor because of the organic matter used in the books production such as the acidic content in the paper and inks.
“Chemists at University College, London have investigated the old book odor and concluded that old books release hundreds of volatile organic compounds into the air from the paper. The lead scientist described the smell as ‘A combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla over an underlying mustiness.’”

Knock off books

Have you noticed a drop in the quality of books you are reading?  It seems that many books are being rushed to print without the same editorial oversight that books once had.  It isn’t that unusual now to find books with misspelled words or non standard grammar.  Ebooks have taken this to a new level especially ones that are self published and have NO editorial oversight.  Amazon’s createspace gives authors the opportunity to create and market their ebooks, but has been accused of allowing some authors to create books that are designed to deceive or confuse book buyers.  Some books have similar or the exact title of popular bestselling books and even some with similar names for the author.  Amazon has been accused of allowing createspace to become a place for spam for books.

If you are a “wanna be” author, createspace may be the perfect place to get published and market your book on However as in many areas it is buyer beware when buying books.  Check to see if the book that you found is published by createspace.  If it is, it may not be the bestselling book you really wanted.

Go Away! I'm Reading Dust Jackets

Emily Dickinson once opined that “there is no frigate like a book.” A book can take us to remote galaxies, into the mists of the distant past, or see our world through the eyes of another, however it is far too easy for the real world to intrude while reading. Enter YA author Erin Bowman who has designed dust jackets that alert all in the area to, “Go away! I’m reading.
The web site provides free downloadable dust jackets and an instructional video to make them neatly fit like the ones at your local library!

Banned Books

While the American Library Association celebrates Banned Books Week once a year, we should not take our freedom to read anything for granted the rest of the year.   Robert P. Doyle has written an updated book entitled, “Banned Books; Challenging our Freedom to Read”.  He describes book banning events that go back as far as 387 B.C.   The book helps us understand censorship and how our unique 1st amendment rights allow us the freedom to read whatever we want to read.   The contents of this book include
  • “Insight—The Challenge of Censorship
  • Interpretation—The First Amendment, The Freedom of Expression and The Freedom to Read
  • Information—First Amendment Timeline, Court Cases, Glossary, Bibliography and Quotations
  • Ideas—Celebration Guide for Banned Books Week and Communication Guide for librarians
  • Incidents—Top Ten Challenged books of 2009 and Challenged or Banned Books—more than 1,800 titles listed alphabetically by author plus Title, Topical, and Geographical Indices.”  (

So even though Banned Books Week was September 24 – October 1, celebrate your right to read all year by reading challenged or banned books.

Download the Universe

Barred Spiral Galaxy
Ebooks have the potential to change the way we think of the book. No longer bound by the printed page – ebooks can feature text, graphics, novel interfaces, reference tools, and user collaboration. The opportunity to convey new ideas are endless, however it can be difficult to find the best of these books because they are not typically reviewed in traditional print review publications. Download the Universe hopes to improve that situation by providing coverage of the best in science writing originating digitally. The review is written by scientists and journalists.
