El Día de los Muertos @ UNT Dallas Library

Come see the awesome display before it's gone!!

El Día de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead or All Saints Day/All Souls Day is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin countries on November 2

El Día de los Muertos is a day to honor the life and death of relatives and loved ones. Alters are assembled for the arrival of the souls of the departed loved ones. Alters usually consist of favorite foods, an array of flowers, photographs of the individuals, paintings, candles, incense, toys, and drinks. Common places for alters are at the gravesites, homes, and other personal spaces. Many activities include grave cleaning, elaborate dances, vigils and family story telling.

OCTOBER
On October 1, 2009, President Obama issued a proclamation establishing October as National Information Literacy Awareness Month.

The American Library Association defines information literacy as “Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.”   Being able to find information is not enough in this age of digital information.  We are flooded with information from our phones, televisions, radios, and computers.  It is important to learn how to filter that information and narrow it down to the information that is needed.   This month we will be adding items to the blog that help you find the information that you need at a given point and time.  If you have a need for information and can’t find it, email us and we will help you find it.

NATIONAL INFORMATION LITERACY AWARENESS MONTH

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION

President Barak H. Obama - National Information Literacy Awareness Month, October 2009
“Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires competency with communication technologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our day-to-day decision making. National Information Literacy Awareness Month highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary to effectively navigate the Information Age.”
