No Name Calling Week

January 24 – 28th, 2011

The Misfits by James Howe inspired the creation of “No Name-Calling Week” by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. While the program is specifically aimed at K-12, adults in college and out of college would benefit by taking part in some of the activities and making an effort to create an atmosphere where name calling is not acceptable.

The Misfits is a young adult book which follows the adventures of four friends as they try to navigate the seventh grade. They decide to create a political party to run for student body offices based on wiping out all types of name calling. In the end, they lose the election but gain the support of the principal and the creation of a “No Name-Calling Day” at their school.
